                                                                    From the Internal Spaces series

   Artist's Statement

An investigation into the internal depths of architectural space characterizes my recent paintings and drawings.  The dark,
hidden spaces above ceilings, behind walls, in basements and boiler rooms intrigue me because they contrast with the ordinary, surface view of the buildings. These secluded places within the buildings invite new perspectives, and encourage the desire to venture beyond our usual space, our usual way of seeing.

Within the concealed architectural skeleton of beams, bolts, wires, and ductwork, warm light sources penetrate the dark spaces. The source of the light is concealed to suggest mystery and spirituality, or a presence beyond what is visible. The light also reveals fleshly textures, colors, and forms that allude to the innards of the body.

I think of these innerscapes as metaphorical portrayals of the deepest reaches of our minds and bodies. They are intimate expanses where we might seek refuge and solitude, transcend the confines of a surface existence, and re-discover our identity and spiritual connection.
